KNIFE FORGING CLASSES
Learn bladesmithing and build your own custom forged
knife.
Cost $125.00 per 4 hour session
(Coal and gas forges, tools, and all materials furnished to make a
5" basic hunting or skinning style knife)
TAKE ANY OR ALL OF THE FOLLOWING 4 HOUR
SESSIONS:
1. INTRODUCTION TO BLADESMITHING AND BASIC
FORGING TECHNIQUES (4 hour course)
How to make the proper fire for forging knife blades. Shop
equipment and safety. Hammer control. Types of steel and how they
react to fire and hammer. Hammer usage to shape hot steel into a basic
5"drop point, trailing point, or upswept hunting or skinning
knife. (Course handouts will be given)
2. ROUGH GRINDING / SHAPING (4 hour course)
Learn rough grinding, clean up, file work, sanding techniques,
and prep. work prior to heat treating. Discuss jigs and shop tips.
(Forged blade required)
3. HEAT TREATING / SHEATH MAKING (4 hour course)
Covers various types of hardening and tempering. Heat treating
of different types of steels. (Course handouts will be given.) Layout,
design, and basic leatherwork to make a pouch style sheath.
4. FINISH WORK (4 hour course)
Blade sanding and final cleanup. Design, shaping, sanding,
and attaching handles. Discussion of bolsters, guards, buttcaps, and
finishing touches. (Course handouts will be given)
5. ADVANCED FORGING (4 hour course)
Covers design of exotic blades and Damascus steels. Treadle
hammer basics. (Pre-requisite: Completion of 4 hour basic forging
session)
Class space is limited. Call to register. All money is due before
class begins. Safety will be stressed in all classes. Bring your own
safety glasses and leather apron. Shoes / Boots required. No sandals.
